2015 Parade: May 31

Welcome!

Malvern, PA to Host Oldest Memorial Parade in America

On Sunday May 31, 2015 at 1:30 pm, The Upper Main Line Memorial Association will sponsor the 147th Annual Memorial Parade in the Borough of Malvern, Chester County, PA.

Recognized as the oldest continuously held Memorial Parade in America, the Parade is expected to include at least six bands, military color guards, military and antique vehicles, floats, fire trucks and a decorated bicycle procession.

The Parade route will again follow King Street from the Malvern Fire Station west to Warren Avenue, south to Monument Avenue then west to the Memorial Park.

In response to the popularity of a full weekend of events last year, there will again be fun, family friendly events all weekend.

On Saturday, May 30th: 9:00AM (registration begins at 8:00AM) there will be the 5th annual 5K Cross Country "Run For Freedom" Race, a 1 Mile Run/Walk and a Kids' Fun Run (starting at 9:45AM). Proceeds from the Run for Freedom will support a local, medically discharged Marine, who has suffered multiple injuries and has been diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Click here to register for the race.

If you are interested in becoming a race sponsor, click here for more information or to sign up. More information about the Kids' Fun Run and the 5K Run is available on their Facebook page.

After the Run for Freedom, from 10 AM- 12:30 PM the Chester Valley Little League will again be sponsoring field activities. Details are still being finalized. See our Facebook page or the CVLL website for the latest information.

Then, at 5PM (tentative) on Saturday the 2nd Annual Community Spaghetti Dinner sponsored by Growing Roots Partners (the organizers of the Malvern Farmers Market) will be held in Memorial Park. Tickets must be purchased in advance for the dinner and will not be available Saturday evening. Tickets can be purchased starting in May and will be available Saturdays at the Malvern Farmers Market or at the National Bank of Malvern. Following the dinner there will be a free concert by the Chester County Concert Band, also in the park. Visit the Malvern Farmers Market website or their Facebook page for more information.

On Sunday May 31st during the Memorial Ceremony, which takes place in the Park immediately after the Parade, we will take a moment to remember and pay tribute to those who have defended our freedom or simply may deserve our gratitude by encouraging those in attendance to place a ribbon on the Malvern Tree of Honor. This was a new element to our Memorial Ceremony last year and has become an important part of our Malvern Memorial Parade tradition.

And then a Memorial Parade tradition returns! For the first time in several years we will again have Revolutionary War reenactors participating in the Parade and performing a military drill in the Park. We are working to build reenactor participation over the next several years leading up to the Parade's 150th celebration in 2018.

For many the highlight activity is the ever popular old-fashioned Community Cake Walk which will be held after the military drill. Details regarding other special events that weekend will be posted on our Facebook page as they are finalized. Please be sure to "friend" us to get all the information! As always there will be food and restroom facilities, so everyone is invited to come bring a chair or blanket, enjoy the Parade and a Family Fun Weekend in the Park!

All of the events take place in Memorial Park, on Monument Ave. in Malvern. In the unlikely event of rain, there is no rain date for the parade or any of the activities. The Run for Freedom will be held rain or shine. Except for the 5K Run and the Community Dinner, there is no charge to attend any of the activities and all are welcome.

The Paoli-Berwyn-Malvern Chapter of the Lions Club will be selling refreshments in the park and will be collecting used eye glasses and hearing aids. Please bring your unused glasses and drop them off at the Lion's stand. For more information visit the Lions Club website.
