Malvern, PA to Host Oldest Memorial Parade in America
On Sunday June 1, 2014 at 1:30 pm, The Upper Main Line Memorial Association will sponsor the 146th Annual Memorial Parade in the Borough of Malvern, Chester County, PA.
Recognized as the oldest continuously held Memorial Parade in America, the Parade is expected to include at least eight bands, military color guards, military and antique vehicles, floats, fire trucks and a decorated bicycle procession.
The Parade route will again follow King Street from the Malvern Fire Station west to Warren Avenue, south to Monument Avenue then west to the Memorial Park.
This is a special year as we will also be commemorating Malvern's 250th anniversary. There will be special events on Saturday, the day before the Parade celebrating that anniversary.
On Saturday, May 31st: To start, at 8:30AM (registration begins at 7:30AM) there will be the 4th annual 5K Cross Country "Run For Freedom" Race and 1 Mile Run/Walk and Kids' Run. Proceeds from the run will benefit a local "wounded warrior" veteran. More information about the Kids' Fun Run and the 5K Run is available on their Facebook page. Then at 5PM on Saturday a Community Spaghetti Dinner will be held in Memorial Park. Following the dinner is a special free concert by the Chester County Concert Band, also in the park.
On Sunday June 1st After the Parade there will again be field activities all ages both after the parade (sponsored by the CVLL), face painting from 1PM, and of course, our ever popular old-fashioned Community Cake Walk. As a special attraction this year,a band will hold a public concert in the Park after the Memorial Ceremony (approximately 3PM). There will be food and restroom facilities, so everyone is invited to come bring a chair or blanket, enjoy the parade and a Family Fun Day in the Park!
All the events take place in Memorial Park, on Monument Ave. in Malvern. In the unlikely event of rain, there is no rain date for the parade or any of the activities. The Run for Freedom will be held rain or shine. Except for the 5K Run and the Community Dinner, there is no charge to attend any of the activities and all are welcome. The Malvern Mom's Club will again be collecting hygiene items for our service men and women serving overseas. Check out our Facebook page for more information.
The Paoli-Berwyn-Malvern Chapter of the Lions Club will be collecting used eye glasses and hearing aids. For more information visit their website P-B-M Lions Club For the latest updated information, check out our Facebook page.
